It’s a rare occasion when you come upon a truly day-making event. The other day I boarded a nearly empty bus; the only passengers besides me were two twenty-something men occupying the seats in front of me. They seemed to be great friends and were having a lively conversation, so I turned off my iPod to listen. As I watched the situation unfold, it took more and more effort to pretend I was reading my book and not following their every word. They both appeard to love 60’s garage pop as they argued over which bands and LP’s were the best. After about fifteen minutes of this, Guy #1 said, “Hey man, it’s not often that I have these kinds of conversations. We should like, exchange numbers or something.” Guy #2 responded, “Oh, yea, totally. You should call me up and we can see a show sometime.” They both fumbled around for their phones and I smiled to myself, realizing that they just met for the first time. “By the way, what’s your name? I’m Joel,” Guy #1 asked as he reached out across the aisle. Guy #2 accepted the handshake responded, “Adam.” While they both were marveling over their good luck of finding each other, I couldn’t help but grin and shake my head. Their conversation continued, until five minutes later when Joel reached his stop and disappeared from my life forever. I can only hope that this won’t be the case for the two of them.
